Begin with the collection, not a default setpoint

Archival and museum cold storage should begin with material-specific conservation targets approved by the institution, then translate those targets into zoning, shelving, retrieval, acclimatization, monitoring, alarm, continuity, and facility requirements. There is no single temperature and humidity target for every collection.

Have the institution’s conservation team define the approved environment for each material group before the room is configured. Film, paper, photographic materials, textiles, mixed-media objects, and other collections do not share one universal temperature and humidity target.

The room plan must also cover retrieval. Door activity, staging, acclimatization, handling time, shelving density, future accessions, monitoring, alarm response, and alternate storage can matter as much as the nominal setpoint.
